Studies on Microbiological Monitoring for Laboratory Animals in Korea

Abstract
For investigation into the actual infections of pathogens in thirty rabbits conventionally fed in two institutes of Korea, 12 species of bacteria and 1 species of mycoplasma were examined by bacteriogical methods except Bacillus piliformis(Tyzzer) known to be uncultivable, and 4 species of bacteria including Tyzzer and l species of mycoplasma among the above microorganisms were investigated by serological methods such as agglutination(Aggl.) test, complement fixation(CF) test and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA). On the other hand, 5 species of virus infections were also investigated by the above three methods plus hemagglutination inhibition (HI) test for antibody detection. Susceptibility to 25 kinds of antibiotics was examined for pathogens isolated from various body sites of the above animals.
The results obtained were as follows :
In the bacteriogical examination for 12 speceis of bacteria and 1 species of mycoplasma except Tyzzer, 4 species of bacteria were isolated; 1) Staphylococcus (Sta.) aureus was isolated at the rate of 30¡60% from nasal cavities of animals. 2) Pseudomonas(Ps.) aeruginosa 20¡60% from oral cavities and and 0¡20% from ceca. 3) Pasteurella(Past.) multocida 60¡90% from nasal cavities and 40¡90% from conjuctivas. 4) Vordetella(Bord.) bronchiseptica 30¡100% from nasal cavities and 20¡30% from tracheas. To the contrary, the remainders of 8 species of bacteria and 1 species of mycoplasma such as Streptococcus(Str.) pneumonia, Str. zooepidemicus, Salmonella(Sal.) typhimurium, Sal. enteritis, Escherfchia(E.) coli O115, Citrobacter(Git.) fruendii, Past. pneumotropica, Corynebacterium(Cory,) kustscheri, Mycoplasma(Myco.) pulmonis were nat isolated.
In the serological examination for the above 4 species of bacteria and 1 species of mycoplasma such as Sal. typhimurium, Bond bronchiseptica, Cory. kutscheri, Tyzzer and Myco. pulmonis, only the antibodies of Bord. bronchiseptica could be detected at the rate of 10¡80% of the animals by Aggl, test, while those of others not. On the other hand, any kind of antibodies of 5 species of virus such as hemagglutinating virus of Japan, mouse hepatitis virus, murine adenovinis, recevir us type 3 and rabbit pox virus could not be detected.
In the antibiotic sensitivity test for the isolates the following results were obtained; 1) The strains of Sta. aureus were resistant to only 2 kinds of antibiotics, colistin and nalidixic acid, but showed low to high susceptibility to all the other 23 kinds of antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, etc. 2) The strains of Ps. aeruginosa showed resistance to 16 kinds of antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, etc., but showed low to high susceptibility to the rest of 9 kinds of antibiotics such as piperacillin, cefoperazone, etc. 3) The strains of Past. multaida were resistant to II kinds of antibiotics such as ampicillin, cloxacillin, etc., but showed law to high susceptibility to the rest of 12 kinds of antibiotics such as penicillin, tetracycline, etc., while cephalothin to which they showed doubtful sensitivity and polymyxin B could not be examined. 4) The strains of Bond. bronchiseptica were resistant to 12 kinds of antibiotics such as penicillin, cloxacillin, etc., but showed low to high susceptibility to the rest of 12 kinds of antibiotics such as erythromycin, tetracycline, etc., whilee oleandomycin and polymyxin B could not be examined.
